Question: I’m looking into fat transfer to the breast and possibly Brazilian butt lift (BBL) or lipo body contouring. What percentage of the fat is retained in the breast and buttocks? Does working out further reduce the transferred fat? If a BBL is performed and you exercise a lot afterward, can you lose the BBL?
Answer: The fat transfer survival rate is dependent on several considerations including the fat harvest technique, the volume of fat transferred, the elasticity and tightness of the area’s skin, the patient’s recovery and care post-op, and other factors. Regardless of technique, somewhere between 40 – 50% of the fat will reabsorb over the first few months. To help with recovery and maximizing fat survival rate patients should:
- Follow the post-operative care instructed by your surgeon
- Stay healthy
- Avoid smoking
- Avoid strenuous physical activities for the first 8 weeks
- Maintain a stable weight and avoid fluctuations in weight gain or loss
