The Scarless Breast Augmentation with Transaxillary Technique

Perhaps the world’s most widely performed cosmetic procedure, breast augmentation has gained its widespread popularity because it can transform a woman’s appearance by enhancing both the size and shape of her breasts.

When considering breast augmentation, many of our patients at Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa express concern about potential scarring resulting from the surgery, as scarring is always a consideration when undergoing any surgical procedure. We are proud to inform that Dr. Olga Bachilo, our plastic surgeon, is a board-certified specialist in breast augmentation procedures and is highly skilled and experienced in scarless breast augmentation using the innovative transaxillary technique, which leaves no visible scars following the procedure.

How is a Breast Augmentation Surgery normally performed?

A majority of breast augmentation procedures are performed by inserting saline or silicone implants into a pocket underneath the fatty breast tissue.  During the breast augmentation procedure, the surgeon must make small incisions in order to insert the implants within that breast pocket.

The incisions will vary according to the type of implant that you select, as well as its size and shape. They may be camouflaged in the crease beneath the breasts, around the areola, or in the underarm crease.  When using the TEBA technique, the incisions are camouflaged in the crease of the underarm, making them visible only upon close examination.

What is the Transaxillary (TEBA) Technique?

The Transaxillary Endoscopic Breast augmentation, or TEBA technique, is an advanced surgical procedure that is used to avoid visible scarring during the breast augmentation procedure.

How is the TEBA Breast Augmentation Performed?

During a Transaxillary Breast Augmentation procedure, Dr. Bachilo creates a small incision through a crease in the underarm. The incision is typically less than 2 inches in length, generally about 1.5 inches.  She then uses an endoscope, which is essentially a long, thin tube with a camera on it, to insert the implants and position them inside the breast pocket.

What are the benefits of the Transaxillary Breast Augmentation?

  • The primary benefit of the Transaxillary Breast Augmentation technique is that it produces no visible scarring. Because the incision is placed within an underarm crease, it is only visible upon close examination.

  • The Transaxillary technique is versatile enough to accommodate all surgical options. This means that patients can choose either saline or silicone implants, and these may be positioned either in front of or behind the pectoral muscles.

  • Because the endoscope provides the surgeon with a clear view of the entire procedure as she inserts and positions the implant into the breast pocket, the degree of precision when positioning the implants is also improved when using this technique.

  • A Transaxillary Breast Augmentation does not affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed.

Who is an ideal candidate for the Transaxillary Breast Augmentation?

You may be an excellent candidate for a breast augmentation procedure if you are in overall good health and want to improve the size, shape, and appearance of your breasts. Breast augmentation is an ideal procedure for those whose breasts are small in proportion to their body, or simply smaller than what you desire, and for those whose breasts are asymmetrical.

Not all patients who are good candidates for breast augmentation are automatically good candidates for the scarless transaxillary technique.  This technique may only be performed on patients who have had no prior breast augmentation procedures, and those who are not affected by breast ptosis or sagging, droopy breasts.

For patients who have had prior breast augmentation procedures, Dr. Bachilo might recommend other options during the procedures in order to diminish the appearance of scarring. For patients with drooping breasts, she may also recommend a breast lift.

How should I prepare for a Transaxillary Breast Augmentation procedure?

Dr. Bachilo will ask about your medical history and will need to be informed about any medications that you may be taking, as you may have to suspend taking some medication in preparation for the procedure.  She will determine whether you have underlying medical conditions that may preclude you from surgery and recommend the best breast augmentation procedure for you.  If you are a smoker, Dr. Bachilo will also recommend that you quit smoking before surgery, as smoking may negatively affect the healing process and may produce less than optimal results.

If you live in Katy, Sugar Land, or neighboring communities in the greater metropolitan Houston area, and want to enhance the size and shape of your breasts, please schedule a free introductory consultation with Dr. Bachilo, board-certified plastic surgeon to learn whether the scarless Transaxillary Breast Augmentation procedure may be suitable for you.
